The "hanky code," a relic from the 1970s and 80s, was used by men as a short cut to signal their sexual/fetish interests and get what they wanted (or at least start a conversation).

Depending upon your location in the world, what some of the colors mean changes (see pink below), which makes it difficult for a man to know exactly what he's flagging, and there have been so many additions to the list that it is hard to keep up with. It certainly can't hurt to have a conversation starter, just don't take it too seriously.
